Well, it finally happened: Eliana got majorly freaked out by a thunderstorm. I’m actually rather shocked that it didn’t happen sooner, but I’m crossing my fingers that I don’t have an extra bed partner tonight.
The instant that first flash of lightning streaked across the sky, tears started streaming down her cheeks, accompanied by wild eyes and jagged breaths. I tried reasoning with her (“You never thought it was scary before!”), distracting her, and entertaining her (who else’s dad told them that thunder is just God bowling?), but nothing worked. Finally, grasping at straws, I suggested that sometimes things that we don’t understand can be scary, and maybe we could find a book at the library to explain how lightning works so we don’t have to be scared of it. Lo and behold, she agreed!
So now I’m sitting here frantically Googling books about thunder and lightning so that I can stave off a future filled with midnight-shin-kicking. Hopefully, one of these will do the trick!
