Book Review | Goodnight Lab by Chris Ferrie

Confession: I hate Goodnight Moon.

I know, I know, it’s a classic. You probably have it etched into your memory from lovingly reading it to your sweet babe every night at bedtime, and that is beautiful. I don’t mean to offend or pass judgment on your cherished moments.

But to me? Ugh! The garish colors, the “goodnight nobody”…. No thanks.

This book, though, is a masterful parody. Author Chris Ferrie (he of Quantum Physics for Babies fame) reimagines the story in a scientific setting, complete with sticky notes stuck to lab coats and a “grumpy old professor shouting ‘publish.'” The illustrations are faithful to the original style, as is the simple text.

“In the great green lab, there was a laser and a lab notebook and a picture of– Einstein with a stern look.” See? It’s better already!

What really puts this book over the top for me is that the young scientist protagonist is a girl of color. Hooray for double diversity!

If you are looking for an out-of-the-box gift, I’d highly recommend this one!
